Marlin Darrah has spent the better part of his life overseas — camera in hand, passport worn thin — filming in 150 countries across all seven continents. He has navigated the Amazon by dugout canoe, documented one of the last uncontacted tribes of New Guinea, threatened with kidnapping by the Taliban on the border of Afhganistan and traced the footsteps of Marco Polo across the ancient Silk Road. Since 1976, as executive director of International Film & Video, he has directed and produced more than 100 dramatic movies, documentaries and travel films — accumulating a body of work that few filmmakers in history can match. His feature films and documentaries have won more than 200 "Best Director," "Best Film" and other awards and nominations at 130 film festivals, from Paris to Berlin, and from New York and Mexcio City to Istanbul. Darrah's films have been viewed by more than 100 million people around the world, via Netflix, PBS, Amazon Prime, Youtube Movies, TUBI-TV, etc. and have enjoyed sales of broadcast rights of more than $10 million.
Career
Five Decades Behind the Lens
Marlin began his career as a travel filmmaker, geography lecturer and documentary filmmaker, combining his academic passion for the world's cultures with a natural gift for visual storytelling. His early films took him across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia — establishing the globe-trotting style that would define his career.
Darrah's work came to the attention of National Geographic, which represents represents and sells thousands of Darrah's stock shots — one of only a limited number of independent filmmakers to hold that distinction. His films from this period, including early work in Egypt, India, and the Pacific Islands, reached audiences of tens of millions through networks such as PBS and CBS and ABC.
The 2000s marked a prolific decade of award-winning documentary and feature film work. Films like Monsoon Lover, Lost Tribes of New Guinea, The Silk Road, Cuba Today, Afterlife, Dali's Greatest Secret, Jesus in Egypt, Mediterranean Dream, Amazon Queen and In the Shadow of Bin Laden earned Darrah recognition at film festivals from Paris to Istanbul, New York to Mexico City — accumulating over 200 awards at 130 festivals worldwide.
In 2014, Marlin Darrah was honored with a Knighthood in the Royal House of Portugal — one of the most distinguished honors bestowed upon a foreign national by the Portuguese crown — in recognition of his decades of cultural filmmaking and his contributions to the documentary arts.
Darrah's movies, documentaries and travel films have found new audiences through Netflix, Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and Tubi, bringing his lifetime of cinematic work to over 100 million viewers worldwide. His most recently completed movie, Phantom India 2026, continues his lifelong exploration of the subcontinent with a new cinematic vision. In addition, Darrah is in pre-production for a movie (Lost Safari) and a television series in Tanzania, in 2027.

In 2014, Marlin Darrah was invested as a Knight in the Royal House of Portugal — an honor recognizing his extraordinary contributions to documentary filmmaking, cultural preservation, and the art of visual storytelling across the globe. He joins a distinguished lineage of artists, scholars, and statesmen who have received this recognition from the Portuguese crown.
